Why are you called Sussex Smokehouse?
Because we’re a smokehouse based in Sussex. Specifically, Crawley Down. It’s as dull and as simple as that.
What makes your nuts different?
Nobody else is roasting nuts in chicken fat. We cold smoke premium almonds, cashews, and sunflower seeds for 12 hours, then season and roast them in real chicken fat. The result is rich, savoury, and completely unique.
Are your products suitable for vegetarians?
Tom’s Meaty Nuts are definitely not, but our Simply Salted range are roasted in rapeseed oil. Our smoked seasonings and smoked rapeseed oil are all vegetarian-friendly too.
What does “cold smoking” mean?
Cold smoking adds smoke flavour without cooking the product. We smoke everything at low temperatures (below 30°C) for 12 hours, which preserves texture while building depth of flavour. It’s a slower, more controlled process than hot smoking.
What wood do you use for smoking?
Our signature blend is oak and apple. For special batches and limited edition products, we experiment with cherry, beech, and other unique wood combinations. Each wood brings different characteristics to the smoke and distinct flavours to our products.
How long do your products stay fresh?
Nuts: Up to four weeks in an airtight container but they rarely last that long.
Seasonings: Best used within six months of opening. Store in a cool, dry place.
Rapeseed Oil: Use within four weeks of opening for best flavour. Store in a cool, dark place. Can I collect my order in person?
Yes. Free collection is available from Crawley Down. Just let us know when you’d like to pick up, and we’ll have your order ready.
Do you offer free delivery?
Yes, we offer free standard delivery on orders over £20 anywhere in the UK via Royal Mail. A paid tracked option is also available. We also offer free delivery to any address in Crawley Down, regardless of order size.
Do you offer free samples?
We offer samples at events and markets when we attend them. Generally, we don’t send out samples, but keep an eye out for discount codes in our Ideas & Updates section.
Where do you source your ingredients?
All our suppliers are UK-based, family-run businesses carefully selected for quality, reliability, and reputation. From the nuts and seeds to the wood dust, seasonings, jars, and packaging – everything comes from small firms we trust.
Do you do wholesale or corporate orders?
Yes. Get in touch to discuss bulk orders, corporate gifts, wedding favours, or party orders. We’ll sort you out.
Will you be adding more products?
Yes. We’re always experimenting. Future additions may include homemade preserves made with foraged fruit. The long-term vision includes charcuterie, smoked meats, cheeses, and butter, but those require more space, equipment, training and knowledge than we currently have.
Check Ideas & Updates for the latest experiments and limited edition releases.
Is there a minimum spend on the Sussex Smokehouse website?
Yes, there is. But it’s only £10. Don’t forget, just £20 of our delicious smoked products also gets you free standard delivery.
Do all the nuts you smoke come from the uk?
Unfortunately not, as the climate in the UK isn’t suitable for growing varieties such as almonds and cashews. But rest assured, a lot of planning and research has gone into choosing a supplier that sources their product ethically and is in keeping with our ethos of supporting fellow small businesses.
I’ve got a nut allergy. can I still eat your stuff?
Our almond and cashew products are made in a facility that handles other nuts and nut-based products, including (but not limited to) peanuts, pecans, walnuts, brazil nuts, hazelnuts and macadamias. We take precautions to prevent cross-contamination, but cannot guarantee our products are completely free from traces.
